Full Review

Gusto has built a reputation as the payroll and HR platform that small businesses actually enjoy using. In an industry historically known for complex, expensive, and frustrating software, Gusto arrived in 2012 with a radically simplified approach: automate everything, price transparently, and make the experience feel consumer-grade.

At its core, Gusto handles payroll — and it does so better than most alternatives. Every pay run calculates federal, state, and local taxes automatically, and Gusto files and pays those taxes on your behalf. W-2s and 1099s are generated at year-end without any extra work. Automatic pay runs ensure employees get paid on schedule even if you forget to log in. For business owners who previously spent hours on payroll every two weeks, this automation is transformative.

But Gusto is more than payroll. The platform has expanded to become a comprehensive HR system for small and mid-sized businesses. Employee onboarding guides new hires through paperwork electronically — offer letters, I-9s, direct deposit setup, and benefits enrollment all happen before day one. This creates a professional first impression and eliminates the first-day paperwork pile.

Benefits administration is a genuine Gusto differentiator. Unlike payroll-only tools that require you to manage benefits separately, Gusto has built a benefits brokerage that lets you offer health insurance, dental, vision, 401(k), FSA, and more through the platform. Gusto becomes the single place where employees manage their comp, benefits, and HR documents.

The employee self-service portal is excellent. Employees can check pay stubs, update direct deposit info, request time off, and view their benefits — without calling HR. This self-service model reduces administrative overhead significantly as your team grows.

Gusto's Time & Attendance feature (available on higher tiers) lets employees clock in and out, with hours flowing directly into payroll — eliminating manual timesheet entry. Contractor payments are also supported, making Gusto useful for businesses with a mix of employees and contractors.
